Highliners: Boats of the Century
These are the living history of the halibut fishing industry in Alaska. Moored at Fisherman’s Terminal, Many of these long line schooners are over 100 years old and all of these pictured are made out of wood. These boats are on display at the Center for Wooden Boats, next to MOHAI in South Lake Union, until the beginning of March when they begin to head north for halibut and black cod.
Inside the Center, there is a very interesting exhibit explaining the history and importance of this fleet in our history. Whether you know it or not, if you have eaten halibut in the past 100 years, one of these boats may well have pulled it in.
