west fjords // iceland
Last year we spent 4 weeks on the South Island of New Zealand and the New Zealand Fiordlands, such as hiking the Milford Sound Great Walk. This fall, it’s the West Fjords of Iceland. This ancient volcanic plate has been scoured by receded glaciers to present us with this stunning light & shadow environment. Our trip started in Ísafjörður (Ice Fjord), the largest population center yet quaintly small village nestled smack in the middle of the fjord complex. The West Fjords are one of the oldest settled regions of Iceland and is featured in many of the Icelandic sagas. We chose the West Fjords because they are off the ring road and as such are less traveled. We are very happy with our choice and were enchanted by this stoic landscape.
With waning October light the shadows grew giant like the trolls and golems that once inhabited these valleys. Although we did not see any elves or gnomes in the West Fjords, their evidences were everywhere. On top of being extraordinarily beautiful, Iceland is full of fun folklore.
